Glacier, at milepost 34

Glacier is the last settlement before the ski area, and it's grown into the corridor's closest thing to a dining destination. Chair 9 Woodstone Pizza & Sports Bar, at 10459 Mt Baker Hwy, is open and well-reviewed. Graham's Restaurant and Store, at 9989 Mt Baker Hwy, has operated under Shirley Schmidt since December 2019, with the restaurant running Monday through Thursday noon to 9 p.m. and Friday through Sunday noon to 10 p.m., and the attached store open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with an ATM on site. Wake 'N Bakery, on Bourne St, is also currently open. The Glacier Public Service Center — the USFS ranger station for this district — is here too, along with a 24-hour self-service kiosk outside it for after-hours pass purchases.

One name worth flagging: Milano's Restaurant, at 9990 Mt Baker Hwy, shows as closed on Yelp. Don't plan a meal around it without calling first.

What Glacier doesn't have is more notable for trip planning than what it does. Bellingham, 45 to 60 minutes away, is still where you're driving for any of it.

Maple Falls, at milepost 28

Maple Falls is smaller on the restaurant front but stronger on supplies. Maple Fuels–Shell, at 7797 Silver Lake Rd, is the last fuel stop before the mountain — open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays. That closure catches people who assume a highway gas station runs seven days a week; if you're driving up on a Sunday, fill up before Maple Falls. Crossroads Grocery, at 7802 Silver Lake Rd, is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and there's a laundromat attached to the Shell station as well. The Mt Baker Visitor Center, at 7509 Mt Baker Hwy, has public Wi-Fi and can be reached at (360) 599-1518 — useful if your cabin's connectivity is unreliable and you need to look something up.

Like Glacier, Maple Falls has no pharmacy, urgent care or full grocery store of its own.

The mistake both towns' names invite

Neither Glacier nor Maple Falls is the ski area, and this catches more visitors than any other single piece of trip logistics on this corridor. Glacier, WA and Mt. Baker Ski Area are separate places about 17 miles apart — roughly a 30-minute drive on a highway that climbs steadily in elevation the whole way. Maple Falls sits another six miles beyond Glacier, so the drive from a Maple Falls cabin to the lifts runs a bit longer again. Booking a "cabin near Mt. Baker" in either town means committing to that drive every day you ski, not walking out your door onto a run.

What's between them

Two smaller stops sit on the highway between Bellingham and these two towns, worth knowing about even if you're not staying there. Kendall has Starvin' Sam's #15 Valero, with Hot Stuff Pizza attached, open roughly 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. — a reasonable late fuel or food stop if you're arriving after Maple Falls has closed for the night. Deming, farther down, has North Fork Brewery — a brewery, pizzeria and wedding chapel locally known as "the Beer Shrine" — along with the Welcome Store and Nooksack Market Center, which currently has the cheapest gas on the whole corridor. If neither Glacier nor Maple Falls has what you need at the hour you're passing through, one of these two towns often does.

The North Fork Nooksack River runs near Glacier, and it's worth being direct about it here rather than treating it as scenery: this is a glacially fed, fast, logjammed river, and it was the site of two rafting deaths in June 2022 despite full safety gear. It's not a river to wade into from a riverside cabin deck, in either town. Silver Lake, closer to Maple Falls, is the better swimming option if that's part of your plan.

Winter driving between the two

In winter, the highway above Glacier is the steeper, more exposed stretch — unlit, winding, and often snow-packed on the approach to the ski area. The road between Maple Falls and Glacier is lower and gentler by comparison, but Washington's traction-tire and chain requirements still apply corridor-wide once conditions call for them, and carrying chains is worth doing regardless of which town you're based in or what you're driving. A storm that closes the highway above Glacier doesn't necessarily affect the Bellingham–Maple Falls–Glacier stretch the same way, but check current SR 542 status before assuming either town is unaffected.
